Professor Dr. Alexander V. Smirnov (1956) received his PhD in Technical Cybernetics from St.Petersburg University of Electric Engineering (1984) and D.Sc. in Mathematical Modeling from St.Petersburg Institute for Informatics and Automation of Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) - SPIIRAS (1994), a Full Professor in 1998. He has extensive expertise in research, development, and design of computer-aided complex systems, mathematical modeling, knowledge management, decision support, and flexible supply chain management. He has worked on wide range problems such as corporate knowledge management, ontology-driven information integration, context management, operational decision support, virtual enterprises configuration, and dynamic logistics.
His research has been funded by European research programs (Information Society Technologies, Esprit, Eureka/Factory, INTAS, Copernicus), Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education, Swedish Institute, Russian Foundation for Basic Research, Russian Academy of Sciences, Ford Motor Company, Festo, Nokia, etc.
Prof. Smirnov is recognized by international research community as an expert in the above research areas - currently he is a member of the technical committee of IFAC TC 5.1 on Manufacturing Plant Control; IEEE SMC TC on Self-organized Distributed and Pervasive Systems, IFIP TC WG5.1 on Global Product Development for the Whole Life-Cycle. He is an expert of European Commission (¹ EX2002B022896) from 2001 (Directorate-General Information Society – Research; International Aspects; Innovation and SMEs; NEST, Ideas). He is a member of IEEE and International Society of Information Fusion, a honorary member of International Association “Institute for Systems and Technologies of Information, Control and Communication”.
He is a member of Advisory Committee of Journal on Information Technologies and Computer Systems (Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia), Journal on Artificial Intelligent and Decision Making (Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia), Journal of Information & Control Systems (Russia), International Journal of Multiagent and Grid Systems (Netherlands); International Transactions on Systems Science and Applications (UK), Intelligent Decision Technologies (Netherlands), and International Journal of Data Analysis Techniques and Strategies (Switzerland).
He is a Vice-Chairman of Integrated Scientific Council on Computer Science, Communication and Control in the St. Petersburg Scientific Center of Russian Academy of Sciences; a Vice-Chairman of SPIIRAS Scientific Board, and a Vice-Chairman of Doctoral Degrees Certifying Committee in Computer Science of SPIIRAS.
Prof. Smirnov received the Russian Federation Government Awards - (1999) Medal of the Order “Services for Russia” Second Class, (1997, 2000) Scientific Scholarship in Computer Science for 1997-2000 and for 2000-2003, (2007) Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation.
